Harry Hobbs, Director of Engineering, InterContinental Hotel. LEED Gold Certification for a hotel building with 550 guest rooms sounds impossible to everyone who knows how the LEED rating system works. Most people assume that hotel is a place for vacation, relaxation, and celebration. While we look at the back side of it, hotel is a huge energy, gas and water consumer, and waste generator. As one of the most luxurious hotels in the city and hotel chain, we cannot sacrifice services by asking our hotel guests to control their usage; however, we want to be green. It is the reason why we pursue the LEED Certification. LEED Certification is not an easy project. When we decide to pursue it, we know that it will take more than a year and large amount of money to make our hotel to be certified. We have renovated some of our facilities in order to lower the energy consumption. “We will only use the amenities which do not take the luxury experience away from our hotel guests. If one product does not meet our expectation, we will go for another one until we can find the best one for ours guest.” Hobbs said. The InterContinental San Francisco has official received LEED-EBOM Gold Certification on January 2011 with scores 83 and 86 in division rate and Energy Star. Since then, we become the largest LEED Gold Recipient of existing buildings in California; the 3rd largest in the U.S. LEED Gold Certification will not be our final goal. We will keep improving if there is any possibility available. |
